What is Marek's Disease? Should I order the vaccine for my chicks?

Marek's disease affects chickens and sometimes turkeys living with chickens, and is a herpes virus infection. This affects the neurological, visceral, and cutaneous systems of the bird, and can spread quickly through flocks since it is contracted through the respiratory system.

We recommend that you order the vaccine if you live in an area of the country where Marek's is known to spread, if your current birds are vaccinated, or if you have a larger scale operation (100+ birds) that would allow the sickness to spread easier.

If you have a small backyard flock, or your current birds are not vaccinated, it is better not to order the vaccine.
