My chicks have pasty butt. What do I do? What caused it?

Pasty butt (a buildup of waste on the rear of the chick) is fairly common in baby chicks. It is best to gently wipe that buildup away with warm soapy water. If left untreated, it will block the chick's vent and the chick can not relieve itself and will likely pass away.  Chicks that have been overheated or chilled may get pasty butt.
